May 16, 2010
By: Jamie Matusow
Editor-in-Chief
Organizers of Luxe Pack New York have announced a full program of educational sessions designed to complement the show floor when the eighth edition of the two-day luxury packaging trade exhibition kicks off on May 19 at The Altman Building and Metropolitan Pavilion (135 West 18th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues). In order to provide a more intimate setting for the seminars, this year’s presentations will take place on the lower level of The Altman Building. All sessions are complimentary with admission. Following is a rundown on sessions and exhibits scheduled as of press time. Wednesday, May 19 10:00am: “The Art of Reduction,” Alcan Packaging Beauty Olivier De-Saignes, marketing director & Doug Jackson market manager Eco-design, initially a mere trend, has now indubitably become a decisive parameter in the cosmetics world, with a very promising future. Alcan Packaging Beauty will provide testimony on the progress the company has achieved, which it says has led to a real breakthrough in eco-design. 11:00am: “Sharing! Spring/Summer 2011” Vincent Gregoire, lifestyle director, NellyRodi Paris An original audio-visual created by NellyRodi/Paris features trends—color, materials, print/pattern and design—for fashion and beauty. Gregoire notes that we’ve turned the page on “white.” He adds that the vital stage of “rebound” has begun where individualism, materialism and hyper-production are fatal! Mutate or die? Mutate of course…there is no choice. Luxury too must play its part! 2:00pm: “Designing For The New Reality—The Sobering Effects of the Recession” A panel led by internationally recognized packaging designer Marc Rosen In only a year, our retail reality has changed from a “What’s new? I think I’ll buy it,” mentality to a more sober, conservative and thoughtful environment. Today our consumer’s decisions are less emotional and based more on need. Gone are the frivolous days of “I buy, therefore I am…” and in their place, consumers are now thinking long and hard about how they spend their dollars. Designers, marketers and manufacturers whose former MO was “give more, charge more and create more” now need to re-group and understand that we are designing products for “A New Reality.” Panelists: Matthew Frost, director global fine fragrance, IFF; Debra Leipman-Yale, president, Arcade Marketing, and Ruth Sutcliffe, senior marketing director and fragrance designer, Coty, LLC. 4:00pm: “Sustainable Packaging: Gearing Up for a Perfect Storm in the Beauty Industry” A panel presented by Beauty Packaging magazine, moderated by Jamie Matusow, editor Beauty Packaging magazine brings together a trio of experts who will report on the latest advances in sustainable packaging and practices on all fronts. John Delfausse, vice president global package development and chief environmental officer, Estée Lauder Corporate Packaging, member of the Sustainable Packaging Coalition—and member of Beauty Packaging’s Board of Advisors; Sandra Krasovec, associate professor in the Packaging Design Department, School of Art & Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, and who serves on the Ad Hoc Faculty Senate Committee on Sustainability and President’s Council on Sustainability; and Silvia Springolo, Client Service Officer for Grail Research, with the latest on consumers’ green buying behavior and what it means for consumer product companies, team up for a comprehensive overview and an insightful forecast. 6:00pm: Luxe Pack New York reception in the lounge Thursday, May 20 10:00am: “2010 Material Technology Reports—Advances in Materials for Consumer Products and Sustainable Design: Materials & Methodologies Driving Innovation” Dr. Andrew H. Dent, vice president, library & materials research, Material ConneXion What are the material advances that will help you create better packaging? How can you separate the facts from the hype? What are the material developments that will result in real innovation? Dr. Dent will provide a sneak peek into the materials and trends featured in the company’s recently released 2010 Material Technology Reports. 11:30am: “A Global Overview for the Luxury Goods Market and the Role of Packaging” Fflur Roberts, industry manager, Euromonitor An examination of key trends and drivers; luxury goods market drivers, luxury goods consumer drivers, luxury goods key markets, luxury goods future outlook, examples of key trends in luxury and how these follow through to packaging, case studies of luxury packaging and how successful these have been; also a comparison of commodity versus luxury packaging, and future trends that we are likely to see in luxury packaging. 2:00pm: “Americans, Luxury and the Crisis…Is the future growth of luxury to be found only in emerging markets? Catherine Jubin, managing director, The International Luxury Business Association Based mainly on the “World Luxury Tracking” results, Jubin will present a broad picture on how American consumers perceive luxury, which segments and brands they spontaneously associate with luxury, the values they attach to luxury, and how the crisis has affected values, attitudes and luxury consumption. A second part will be devoted to analyze how emerging markets differ from developed markets, and more specifically the U.S., when it comes to luxury. 3:30pm: “What’s New in Sustainable Packaging from Exhibitors” Moderated by Jeff Falk, senior editor, GCI Magazine with Koert Bruins, president, Iggesund Paperboard US; Sheherazade Chamlou, VP sales & marketing, SGD North America; David Gabriel Lunati, director of marketing, Monadnock Paper Mills; Mark Ormiston, director of research and development, Anomatic Corporation; Laura A.
